NDJ – The country of Guatemala, Central America, has imposed a new law: anyone caught stealing a cellphone may get sentenced up to 15 years in the brink.
The ‘extreme’ law was introduced and approved after numerous cellphone thefts led to violent confrontations, often resulting in death.
To avoid people killing each other over a cellphone, Guatemalan government believes a 15 years jail term will be a great deterrent.
“Even the minimum sentence of six years under the new law, should be enough reason for someone not to commit a violent crime over a stolen cellphone,” a spokesperson for the Guatemalan government said.
With the new law, the government has also imposed a mandate which requires cellphones to be registered. “That law will see to it that anyone, buyer or seller of dubious cellphones, can be tracked and can be sentenced by means of a fine or by going to jail for 5 to 10 years,” the government representative said.
Guatemala has 15 million citizens. According to government records 12,000 cellphones are stolen every month.
