SYDNEY – A family in Australia succeeding in putting up and lighting up half-a-million Christmas lights all at the same time; a feat worthy of a world record.
David Richards, who lives with his family in Canberra, managed to install 502,165 Christmas lights. He began installing the lights in October, took one week off from work to devote to the project and has been working on his Christmas light show every weekend since then.
The hard labor paid off. Guinness World Record was on hand to record the event when David flipped the switch and turned all the lights on. The Richards family held the most Christmas light record before in 2011 but lost it in 2012 to a family in New York.
“I have always loved Christmas. It brings people together,” says David. In 2011, David placed 331,038 Christmas lights around his home. This year he surpassed his own expectations with an additional 170,000 lights.
Over the next few week, the Richards family will showcase the Christmas lights to visitors with the intend to raise money for a good cause.
Richards says he would like to keep the world title in his family but in order to accomplish that he will need to invest in power generators or “the electric bill will have its own world record,” David says smiling.
