TOKYO – If you think that the 2006 movie ‘Snakes On A Plane’, staring actor Samuel L. Jackson, made you squeamish, picture this: a man in Osaka Japan kept 80 snakes in his tiny apartment that is barely 107 square feet big … that’s about the size of a standard 10 X 11 foot room in the US.
Besides a 10 foot long Boa constrictor and a variety of other snakes, 80 in all, the man also had numerous poisonous lizards.
A neighbor blew the whistle on the forty year old man, after he noticed a snake slithering on the wall opposite his own tiny apartment.
Police couldn’t believe what they found and although they didn’t arrest the man, they want to know how he came to own so many snakes and lizards.
The man says he kept his pets as ‘companions’ and fed them frozen mice.
An initial investigation points out that the man’s slithering friends were all well kept, well fed and in overall good health.
Police seized the reptiles, which were all kept in individual containers, because the man didn’t have proper permits to keep them.
Owning reptiles has become increasingly popular in Japan over the past few years. Testimony to their popularity is the fact that Japan is home to a “reptile café”, where visitors can observe and pet a range of different species of reptiles while having a cup of tea, the Telegraph reports.
