ROME – Italian police are on a manhunt to capture Bartolomeo Gagliano, a convicted serial killer who disappeared without a trace.
Gagliano, who was incarcerated at the Genoa prison received a holiday pass because of good behavior and was allowed to visit his ailing elderly mother . But when he didn’t report back to prison on the assigned day, prison guards realized their bird had flown the coop.
A large scale manhunt across Italy was instigated immediately but search as they may police can’t find Gagliano who seems to have ‘vanished without a trace’.
Genoa police Chief has asked Italian citizens to be on the lookout for Gagliano and notify their local police department immediately if they spot him. The Chief warns citizens not to approach and confront the killer directly because “he is armed and very dangerous”, the Chief said.
Bartolomeo Gagliano was allowed to visit his mother in Savona on Tuesday. During his holiday he hijacked a car and forced the driver at gun point to take him along. At some point Gagliano told the driver to get out of the car. He then drove away alone.
Italian police fear Gagliano may have crossed the border into France, which will make it much more difficult for them to capture their fugitive because French and Italian police are known not to want to cooperate with each other.
Gagliano was convicted in 1981 for beating a prostitute to death with a rock and injuring another. He escaped from prison however and in 1989 he killed two more people while on the run. Police captured him and threw him back in the brink.
Since then, Bartolomeo Gagliano has managed to escape another six times.
