JERUSALEM – Thousands of believers from around the world come together in Bethlehem, Israel, to celebrate the remembrance of the birth of Christ.
According to the New Testament, Jesus Christ, founder of Christianity, was born in Bethlehem, which is situated on the West Bank.
Jerusalem’s Patriarch Fuad Twal, the highest ranking Roman Catholic clergyman in the area, led the procession to the Manger Square in front of the Church of the Nativity. Twal will also lead the believers into the church to attend the midnight mass and will give a speech towards the end of the mass.
The Israeli paper Haaretz says that Twal is going to criticize the construction projects that are taking place at the West Bank. The building of new homes in that area has already been scrutinized by others who claim the Israeli government did this to keep Palestinians from moving to the West Bank near Jordan.
Twal has already stated during a recent interview that he finds the construction projects damaging to the peace treaty between Israel and Palestine.
