BERLIN – Amazon shows once again its true mindset is strictly business by firing 600 employees from one of its German distribution centers 2 days before Christmas.
600 employees working at the Brieselang distribution center near Berlin were told on Monday by Amazon management their services were no longer needed and they were asked to leave the building immediately.
The German Labor Union Verdi was appalled with Amazon’s decision saying that the company shows once again it puts profits above people. Just two weeks ago, Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, told 60 Minutes that the company’s goal is to run as efficiently as possible to optimize profits.
Verdi claims Amazon ‘used’ the 600 people to help it ship out its Christmas orders and with that task accomplished, the individuals were no longer needed and dis-guarded like trash. The new distribution center opened its doors in November just in time to fulfill end-year’s orders.
“At first the American Internet company refused to give our employees proper wages, now they want to bring their ‘wild west culture’ to Germany,” a spokesperson for Verdi said.
Employees from two other Amazon distribution centers, located in Bad Hersfeld and Leipzig, went on strike on Monday in support of the employees who were terminated.
Amazon Germany employees 9,000 full-time employees and 14,000 part-time. It is the second largest Amazon division income generator world wide behind the United States and grew last year at a staggering rate of 21 percent, boasting an annual revenue of $US8.7 billion.
