ROME – 25 year old Caterina Simonsen from Bologna Italy received numerous death threats after issuing a plea on Facebook to continue to allow medical laboratories the use of test animals.
Caterina was born with not one but four very rare genetically inherited illnesses that made her totally disabled. She’s breathing with the aid of an apparatus and would have been dead by the time she was nine if it wasn’t for discoveries made in medical laboratories by testing new medicine on animals.
The young woman posted a picture of herself on Facebook with the subtext: “Grateful for the real scientific research, test animals included.”
That was enough of a caption to set off a barrage of insults:
“As far as I am concerned you can die tomorrow,” one person responded.
“I wouldn’t even offer my goldfish for a selfish person like you,” another wrote.
The insults kept on coming, including death threats.
The Italian newspaper ‘la Repubblica’ reports that Caterina received more than 30 death threats since posting her picture with the caption and that the number of insults by ‘animal lovers’ are now over 500.
However, not everyone is against Caterina for wanting medical research to continue on lab animals. According to the paper, she also received 14,000 ‘Likes’.
