JAKARTA – A lion at a zoo in Indonesia died from fixation after he got his head stuck between the railings of a fence and couldn’t free himself.
The one and a half year old lion, named Michael, was reportedly already dead when zookeepers found him. Strangely the lion’s body has ‘disappeared’ making it impossible for police to investigate the incident.
Agus Supangkat, spokesperson for the Surabaya Zoo says “there was no foul play involved”. “Michael was young, it’s possible he was playing about and that’s how he got stuck in the fence.”
But animal lovers aren’t buying the explanation considering the zoo’s reputation.
The Surabaya Zoo has been nicknamed ‘the cruelest zoo in the world’ because several animals have died while under the zoo’s care. Between July and September 2013, a staggering 43 animals died at Surabaya.
Animal rights activists have begun circling petitions online to shut the zoo down.
But BBC reports that shutting the zoo down is not an option because other animal sanctuaries in Indonesia show no interest in taking in the animals housed at Surabaya Zoo because many of the animals have been kept in deplorable conditions and are in urgent need of medical care.
